Re “San Diego needs a nonprofit electric utility” (April 12): This commentary promoting a nonprofit electric utility leaves out the hardest question — how would San Diego pay for it? SDG&E’s infrastructure would cost billions, and the city, already facing serious financial strain, is in no position to secure favorable borrowing terms.
And ownership alone doesn’t ensure competent management. The city’s track record with streets, water lines and basic maintenance raises real concerns about its ability to run an even more complex system. Before embracing a nonprofit utility, San Diegans deserve a realistic assessment of the financial and operational risks.
