(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento County Public Health held a press conference Tuesday to address a growing measles outbreak and share precautions the community needs to take.
Public health officials said there are now 11 confirmed cases in the Sacramento area. According to officials, 10 children were not vaccinated. Meanwhile, Placer County confirmed eight cases on Monday.
The department reported six cases in March, and another two in early April.
Officials said that the local cases are serious, however, there have been no hospitalizations to date. Officials emphasized the infectious nature of measles, noting exposures at birthday parties, community events and more.
The California Department of Public Health, SCPH and surrounding counties are working together in an effort to respond to the outbreak, officials said.
The health department advises parents to ensure their children are vaccinated to prevent further spread.
Parents with kids who are not eligible for vaccination are advised to speak with health care providers to learn about the risk and steps to take in case of exposure.
As of Tuesday, there are a total of 39 confirmed measles cases statewide.
