One person was injured in a shooting near Sepulveda Middle School in the San Fernando Valley Wednesday afternoon, prompting a brief campus lockdown.
School administrators wrote in a message to the school community that they received a report “of a firearm discharged near our campus” but that no students were injured.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the area after receiving a call about a shooting at 3:08 p.m., said Lyndsey Lantz, a department spokesperson. Lantz said one person was taken to a hospital by ambulance.
The extent of the victim’s injuries were not immediately clear, but a school police source told The Times that an officer applied a tourniquet to a victim while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
“We are currently gathering details on this incident,” said school police spokesman Jorge Herrera. “We can confirm the shooting occurred off campus adjacent to Sepulveda Middle School.”
Los Angeles police are looking for a male suspect, who they believe has left the area. A spokesperson said officers recovered a weapon at the scene, but declined to provide specifics.
