San Diego’s USS Spruance turns back Iranian vessel trying to evade blockade in Strait of Hormuz – San Diego Union-Tribune

The San Diego-based destroyer USS Spruance on Tuesday intercepted an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel that tried to evade the U.S. maritime blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. Central Command said Wednesday in a post on X.

The Spruance “successfully redirected the vessel, which is heading back to Iran,” the statement said. “Ten vessels have now been turned around and ZERO ships have broken through since the start of the U.S. blockade on Monday.”

The destroyer is part of the San Diego-based USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group. The Spruance was among the first warships to fire missiles at Iran when the war began on Feb. 28.
