BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — A Kern County judge has approved a mental health diversion for a woman shot by police outside a Bakersfield Walmart last July after she allegedly lunged at them with a knife, court records show.

Deashanay Holmes is due back in court in July for a status hearing. If she successfully completes the diversion program, the case against her could be dropped.

Police said on July 3, 2025, at around 7:43 p.m., officers were called to the Walmart on Gosford Road for a report of an assault that happened inside the store. Body camera videos from two officers were released by the department in late July.

When officers arrived, they were directed to Holmes by store security, who identified her as the suspect in the assault, which happened inside the Walmart. Holmes was arrested and booked into jail in mid-July.

Officer Christopher Cornejo was identified as the officer involved in the shooting, who joined the department in December 2024. Cornejo was placed on administrative leave following the incident, which was his first officer-involved shooting. He has since rejoined the department.

Holmes is set to appear in court on July 16, 2026, for a diversion status hearing.
