Re “Gloria proposes layoffs, furloughs and deep cuts to arts, libraries, recreation to close $146M deficit” (April 15): Kudos to Mayor Gloria for proposing budget cuts. As far as they go, they make sense.
Of course, the big one was left out because it’s a done deal. In 2023, the mayor and council gave a 23% pay raise over three years to more than half of city employees, even though any reasonable elected leader would have seen this budget shortfall coming. The other one is the failure of the mayor and council to contract out services like trash to private contractors.
The city’s problems will never be solved until citizens vote in elected officials who focus on cost control and taxpayers instead of city labor groups. This is a one-party system in power. How is that working out?

Simple solution: Cut 300 middle managers, each making $200,000 per year. That’s $60 million right away.
