The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI patrols from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Saturday, targeting drivers suspected of driving under the influence.

Officials reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol, noting that some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving. Authorities said drivers should follow usage directions and read warning labels regarding operating a vehicle. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

Police said drivers arrested for a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, in addition to a suspended license.

The patrols are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
