California Highway Patrol completed a crash investigation on Thursday on Highway 1 near Handley Drive that caused heavy congestion and lane closures in the area.The follow-up investigation was connected to a previous crash on Highway 1 south of Carpenter Street that left two Carmel residents seriously injured, according to CHP.CHP says that one of the people involved in the crash has died. A preliminary CHP investigation found that a 96-year-old Carmel man was driving a Lexus sedan southbound behind a Subaru sedan driven by a 24-year-old Oakland woman on Thursday, April 9, at about 12:30 p.m. At the same time, a 78-year-old Carmel woman was driving a Honda SUV northbound.For reasons still under investigation, CHP said the Lexus crossed the double yellow lines and collided with the Honda.The impact sent the Lexus back into the southbound lane, where it then crashed into the Subaru.The Subaru driver was not injured. The drivers of the Lexus and Honda were taken to a local hospital with suspected major injuries at the time.The man killed was identified as 96-year-old William Ziering of Carmel.
