LONG BEACH — Senior pitcher Riley McAndrew was motivated to continue the ongoing legacy of Millikan’s softball team. That’s why McAndrew brought her best stuff inside the circle when it mattered the most.
“I could tell by her performance that she really wanted this game,” Millikan coach Michelle Lehr said. “She proved it.”
The George Washington commit threw a complete game and allowed only three hits and one earned run in Millikan’s 6-1 victory against Long Beach Poly at El Dorado Park in a Moore League game Thursday.
She also drew two walks, scored two runs and hit a leadoff triple in the sixth inning.
“I just know I have to do the best for my team,” said McAndrew, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. “Towards the end, after the no-hitter was up, I was just trying to finish. Do my best, but really just be competitive and make the batters compete.”
Millikan improved to 15-6 overall and 6-0 in the Moore League. The Rams are halfway to securing their sixth straight league title. They are on a 31-game win streak in league.
“We still have to keep working hard,” McAndrew said, “making sure we’re putting all our effort and focus in at practice. It means a lot to us, especially this group of seniors.”
Junior first baseman Sunnie Vaafuti drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for Long Beach Poly (9-4, 6-2), which was trying to grab a share of the league lead Thursday.
Poly pitcher Tegan Breaux threw a complete game. She allowed nine hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out four batters.
“I told my kids after the game, I wanted this,” Poly coach Elizabeth Sanches-Martin said. “We wanted this for you. We love you guys at a whole other level than softball is concerned. But you have to hit the ball to score runs, and you have to score runs to win a game, and that’s where we fell short.”
Millikan junior outfielder Mia Meza chopped a leadoff single in the top of the first inning. Meza stole second base and reached third on a passed ball.
Senior infielder Addy Everett’s sacrifice fly to deep right field scored Meza for a 1-0 lead.
“I think we all played together really well,” Everett said. “The senior mentality, go all out. We have nothing to lose.”
Millikan added three runs in the fourth. Senior outfielder Kayla Cisneros hit a leadoff double. Everett singled and stole second, which put runners on second and third with no outs.
Junior infielder Lauryn Kim reached on a fielder’s choice but Cisneros was tagged out at home for the first out of the inning. McAndrew drew a walk to load the bases. Sophomore infielder Lizzie Hobbs was hit by a pitch, scoring Everett for a 2-0 lead.
“I just feel like they’re all looking up to us,” Everett said of Millikan’s non-senior players. “We just have to carry the tradition on.”
Senior designated player Peyton Dobrovolny hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kim. McAndrew also scored on the play after getting into a rundown.
Millikan led 4-0 after four innings.

Everett’s sacrifice fly scored senior Hailey Fematt in the fifth for a 5-0 lead.
McAndrew hit a leadoff triple in the sixth. Hobbs brought home McAndrew for a 6-0 lead.
“That’s something I’ve been waiting to do for this team,” McAndrew said of her hitting.
Rams sophomore catcher Maya Hernandez hit a two-out triple but was left stranded.
Poly senior third baseman Emoni Lam Sam’s two-out double broke up McAndrew’s no-hit bid in the bottom of the sixth.
Jackrabbits senior catcher Janelle Morris hit a leadoff double in the seventh inning. Freshman Abigail Rodriguez entered as a courtesy runner and later scored Poly’s only run of the game via Vaafuti’s sacrifice fly.
Millikan will play at Cabrillo on Monday, April 20. Poly will host Compton on Tuesday, April 21.
