LONG BEACH, Miss. (WLOX) – It’s been more than a week since over a dozen residents were abruptly told they had to leave the Equal Steps Veterans Home in Long Beach.
Equal Steps Veterans Home was shut down last Saturday, just one day after its owner, Nekole Predium, was booked on a warrant for felony bad checks out of Slidell.

Officials said the home never had a state license to operate as a care home.
WLOX obtained an incident report from the Long Beach Police Department, which detailed what officers saw inside the home.
The report described the poor condition of the residents, with many of them smelling strongly of urine and without proper access to a restroom.
One resident was quoted as saying, “I’m living in hell,” and asked officers to get him out.
Police also learned that one of the residents was listed as a missing in the National Crime Information Center database.
Of the 17 residents mentioned in the report, Predium was listed as the next of kin for six of them.
After the home shut down, many of the residents were taken to local hospitals until they could find new living arrangements.
As far as what comes next for those who were displaced, there is a potential opportunity for the City of Long Beach to declare the event a local emergency. That would allow the housing authority to provide rental assistance to any of the displaced veterans who qualify.
