The New Orleans Saints are bringing in a rookie at quarterback for Week 9.

Second-round pick Tyler Shough will make his first career NFL start on Sunday, Nov. 2, against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported the news Tuesday, stating that the team was informed of the decision earlier in the day.

Shough, 26, entered in the third quarter of last Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as former starter Spencer Rattler continued to struggled. The second-year QB won the job over the rookie in training camp, but the team went just 1-7 under his watch. Rattler had six turnovers in his last six full quarters of action before being benched.

Head coach Kellen Moore said after the game that he would take 48 hours to decide on his starter going forward, and he made the change official Tuesday. In relief last week, Shough went 17 of 30 for 128 yards and an interception.

Shough spent six years in college before being drafted 40th overall by the Saints in April. He last played at Louisville in 2024, where he had a breakout season of 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. Shough began his college career with two years at Oregon and three years at Texas Tech.

The Saints have two road games before their Week 11 bye, visiting the Carolina Panthers after their date with the Rams this weekend.
