SAN FRANCISCO (WCSC) — An earthquake estimated to have reached as high as 8.3 magnitude on the Richter scale devastated San Francisco on April 18, 1906.
The earthquake ruptured the northernmost 296 miles of the San Andreas Fault. More than 3,000 people are believed to have been killed by the quake.
The earthquake was felt from southern Oregon to south of Los Angeles and as far inland as central Nevada.
A report from the U.S. Geological Survey found more than 28,000 buildings were destroyed by the quake and the fires that followed.
