The La Jolla Shores Association’s April 15 meeting featured a handful of updates for the community.
Banner district changes
The association is now overseeing the La Jolla Shores banner district, resident Janie Emerson announced.
This comes after a resolution was taken to the San Diego City Council “to identify the La Jolla Shores Association as the sponsoring organization … and authorize the La Jolla Shores Association to install street banners in the public right of way promoting cultural or civic events or activities of general public interest.”
The resolution also expands the banner district’s geographical boundaries.
The district previously was managed by the La Jolla Shores Business Association.
Last year, representatives of UC San Diego went to LJSA with plans for their own banner district. The banners, which would be hung on light poles on several streets near the university, were to focus on UCSD and creating “a sense of place.” They would not be political, commercial or religious, according to the school.
LJSA board members at first saw the proposal as one-sided or unnecessary, but they approved it on a 7-1 vote in September with modified boundaries.
The lone dissenting vote came from trustee Karen Marshall, who said “It sounds to me like you guys have a lot of space and people know who you are,” and “I just don’t think you need to [have banners] in our area.”
The UCSD banner district boundaries now encompass La Jolla Village Drive, Regents Road, North Torrey Pines Road, Torrey Pines Scenic Drive and La Jolla Shores Drive beginning after Horizon Way and ending at Naga Way.
The La Jolla Shores banner district boundaries now stretch from Naga Way through “The Throat” (the intersection of Torrey Pines Road, La Jolla Parkway and Hidden Valley Road) and up La Jolla Parkway.
Banners already are in place on a lot of poles, and new ones can be added with permitting through the city of San Diego.
‘Tides of Creativity’ rescheduled
LJSA’s second annual “Tides of Creativity” event will take place more than a month later than initially planned because of what board President John Pierce described as “permitting issues.”
It now will be held Saturday, June 20, instead of Saturday, May 9. Last year’s inaugural “Tides of Creativity” was held June 21, highlighting local artists, authors and businesses and including arts and crafts, bounce houses, face painting, pony rides and more.
The rescheduling received the board’s unanimous support April 15. Further updates will be available soon.
Board trustees sworn in
San Diego City Council President Joe LaCava swore in LJSA’s newly elected batch of trustees at the April meeting.
Incumbents Kathleen Neil and Mike McCormack and newcomers Ross Rudolph and Nick Lynk attended the meeting in person. Megan Guy, Sepi Gilani and incumbent Ed Mackey joined via Zoom.
