Longtime California education leader David Gordon announced last week that he plans to retire in 2027 from his position as superintendent of the Sacramento County Office of Education.
Gordon, 79, has led the Office of Education for 21 years. He was the superintendent of Elk Grove Unified School District, the state’s fourth-largest school district, from 1995-2004. Before that, he was deputy state superintendent for the California Department of Education.
Gordon said he made the early announcement to allow the county board of education time to search for his successor and to allow for a smooth transition in leadership.
“It has been the honor of my life to serve the students, families, educators, and community members of our great state and Sacramento County,” Gordon said in a statement. “Our work has been about seeing opportunity in challenge — and proving what is possible when we work together. I am deeply grateful to the board, my colleagues, and our partners for their leadership, collaboration, and dedication to the students and families we serve.”
