SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The U.S. Department of Justice sent a press release Saturday regarding the unexpected death of a 24-year-old inmate at Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) San Diego.

According to the press release, on Saturday, April 18, around 9:35 a.m., Roberto Daniel Garcia
Jacobo, 24, was found unresponsive at MCC San Diego.

Employees at MCC reportedly attempted life-saving measures while emergency medical services (EMS) were requested. Jacobo was pronounced dead shortly after by EMS personnel.

Jacobo was sentenced in the Southern District of California to 24 months for the Importation of Methamphetamine. According to the press release, he had been in custody at MCC San Diego since Sept. 11, 2025. The FBI has been notified of the incident.

MCC San Diego is an administrative security facility located on Union Street in downtown San Diego. MCC San Diego operates under the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
