Re “$4M for lifeguard tower joins the list of San Diego debacles” (April 15): I just read about the $4 million refurbishment. I’ve got a new debacle of note to add to this list. In our neighborhood, there are crews removing asphalt and replacing it with concrete on many streets. On each of these streets, the asphalt was in great shape — no potholes, no problems.
Here are the names of three of the streets: Fried, Ducommon and Honors. All three of these very small streets have little or no traffic on them. Fried has maybe 20 houses on it, and no one uses the south entrance from Stresmann; it gets maybe 10 cars a day. A reasonable guess is that each of these is costing the city $10,000 plus! And yet there are big potholes on Stresmann itself that just sit there right next to where they are working. Seriously, can the U-T tell us who makes these decisions?
