SAN FRANCISCO, CA — As tens of thousands of Northern Californians prepare to lose their food benefits, some eateries are stepping up to help, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Amid the ongoing government shutdown, Attorney General Rob Bonta say Tuesday that Novermber will mark the “first time ever” that SNAP benefits — known as CalFresh in the Golden State — are halted for millions who rely on them.

Following the shutdown on Oct. 10, USDA sent a letter to state agencies directing them to put an indefinite hold on November benefits.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the USDA notice says. “At this time, there will be no benefits issued on November 01. We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats.”

One in eight Americans rely on federal food assistance, including some 5.5 million Californians.
