There are people on this island who make a difference. They’ve mostly lived in other places where things sometimes don’t go so well for the inhabitants. They’ve also maybe lived in places where things were in balance and more joyful. Maybe Coronado attracts those who have learned from life experience that they can make a difference. That’s what I learned growing up as a child in a Navy family. We moved every two years. Every town has a personality and it affects all those that live in it. Nature and nurture are equally important in this respect. I attended three different high schools, and all were very different experiences. Some very positive and some very not. I found that the quality of my life has a lot to do with the natural environment in each locale. I think that it is even more important how people treat each other. It affects you in so many ways.
Coronado High School, at the time (way back in 1968), had a balanced approach to education. It supported the intellect, the teaching of core subjects, and also the physical health and creativity of its students. I think it still does, but only the kids going there now can tell you for sure. I am just looking at their faces when they are working hard on something at the library, playing in the city’s recreation centers, or exhibiting their creativity in our local artistic venues. The senior folks I meet here seem like they grew up well and are still enjoying life, too. Coronado is a place where personal growth, friendships, and joy are encouraged and sustained over time.
So if you are the kind of person that volunteers in our community or teaches or just works hard to keep the island in balance in any of these ways, well then, thanks!
If you see joy in the faces around you, smile back and think about how maybe you are a part of that synergy.
