CARMEL, Calif. – Behind the brilliant play from sophomore Måns Boje, Grand Canyon men’s golf closed out the fall season with a top five showing at the Preserve Golf Club Collegiate at the Saint Lucia Preserve in Carmel.
Boje seemed like he couldn’t miss if he tried, notching 19 birdies to lead all 68 players in the field. His final scoreline was a 12 under, 66/68/70, and was a key contributor to GCU’s 16 under second round that led all teams in best single round score.
Second round play concluded early morning Tuesday, followed by the third and final 18 holes. GCU shot 8 under in round one and 16 under in round two until a 6 over round three concluded a tournament that saw seven teams finish 12 under or better.
BYU, ranked 25th in the nation, won the tournament at 29 under. The Lopes shot 18 under for its first top five placement of the season and moves its record to 25-27 after four fall tournaments.
Boje had five birdies Tuesday, tallying four over his final 11 holes. The sophomore from Sweden was the only Lope under par in the final round and excelled on par 3’s, shooting 3 under to tie for second best among the field.
Junior Gavin O’Neill and sophomore Matthew Diehl tied for 25th with 2 under cards. O’Neill matched Boje’s round one 66 with a 6 under second round that was bogey free with six birdies. The Irishman shot 3 over in the final round with two birdies.
Diehl’s day began with a par to close out a 3 under second round, a round that consisted of three birdies and an eagle. Diehl ended his tournament with back-to-back birdies and shot 3 over.
