There are all sorts of little strings that hold together a stylish prom-ready look, from the tiny stitching found along the edge of a cummerbund to the lacy bits that keep a corsage in place.

But there is one prom in town where strings are the central stars, or rather the figures found prancing with the help of strings and a talented puppeteer at the lead: It’s Puppet Prom, a fundraiser for the Bob Baker Marionette Theater.

The taffeta-and-tuxedo’d to-do is frolicking at the Garibaldina Society in Highland Park May 9, and there are a few tickets still available (though those will be snapped up, most assuredly, for the chance to party with puppets in a prom-like setting is extremely rare).

DJ music, a photo booth, and other convivial details will lend the get-fancy evening a spirit of mirth.

Vino will be for sale, and cocktails, too, and a bounty of bites, both sweet and savory, will keep the energy high for the dance floor.

If you can’t prom-it-up among the puppets this May, there is a way to help the charming vintage theater stick close to its atmospheric venue: The troupe is hoping to buy its York Boulevard building in Highland Park, a move just revealed with the theater launched a major Capital Campaign earlier in April.

“The majority of building funds have been committed,” shared the theater, thanks to a puppet-tastic group of foundations and supporters, revealing that the nonprofit company is “on the cusp of purchasing and restoring its forever home.”

But there is still more money that is required, with the building purchase set at $5 million and “critical repairs” costing $2 million.

“Over the last five years, we’ve gone from losing our old Theater to buying our forever home — all the way to performing on the Coachella stage,” said Co-Executive Director Mary Fagot.

“At every step, the people of Los Angeles have supported us. Their steadfast commitment has led to this moment which will ensure our future, In LA to Stay… Forever.”
