The Bay Area forecast for this week is putting the San Francisco Giants’ first game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park this season at risk of an ultra-rare rainout.
National Weather Service meteorologist Brayden Murdock told SFGATE that “off and on showers and storms” are expected to arrive in the Bay Area on Monday and last through Tuesday, when the Giants and Dodgers are scheduled to start a three-game series this week. There’s a chance of thunderstorms and urban flooding with this storm, which Murdock said should start to dissipate on Wednesday afternoon.
But Murdock also noted that a storm coming during this time of year is “uncommon” for the Bay Area, which the Giants’ lack of rainouts at Oracle Park can certainly prove. Since moving downtown in 2000, the Giants have only had six games rained out in their 27 seasons — and just one in the last 20 years.
Funnily enough, the Dodgers were also the opponent for the last rained out game on April 6, 2018. That game was made up as part of a day-night split doubleheader in the next Los Angeles visit to San Francisco, a day that famously included Giants fan favorite Pablo Sandoval making his first-ever pitching appearance. Prior to that, the Giants last saw games rained out in 2006, when a storm postponed two straight games against the Astros.
The collective bargaining agreement has restrictions on when a rescheduled game can take place, mostly focused on consecutive days with a game for the teams or adding an extra travel day and destination for road teams. There are also rules about required off days on West-to-East road trips, which both teams deal with quite often. So finding a date later in the season for a makeup date could be quite challenging.
If a game does get rained out, the best solution might be to make it up after Thursday’s scheduled 12:45 p.m. game, turning the day into a split doubleheader. The Dodgers have a home game against the Cubs on Friday, so the flight would be rather short, while the Giants also remain home to face the Marlins.
