Charges are filed against a 23-year-old Detroiter for a shooting at a Royal Oak Township church last week.
Michael Tyrone Bowers is in the Oakland County Jail, charged with discharging a firearm from a vehicle, discharging a firearm at or in a building, and two counts of felony firearm. The shooting happened April 16 at God’s Grace Missionary Baptist Church, located at 8712 Cloverdale Avenue. The church was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported, officials said.
According to Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw, the church’s front door was shattered. Shaw also stated that the firearm reportedly used in the shooting was found.

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office described it as a “drive-by shooting,” and said there were bullet holes in the church entryway. A shell casing was also found, the prosecutor’s office said, and surveillance video showed the vehicle used in the shooting allegedly belongs to Bowers.
At Bowers’ arraignment in 43rd District Court, bond was set at $150,000. His next court hearing is scheduled for April 28 for a probable cause conference.
Bowers faces up to 10 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine if convicted of either discharge of firearm crime. Felony firearm is punishable by two years in prison, to be served consecutively to any related sentence.
