People and pets of all sizes have been invited to attend the 32nd Annual Walk for Animals at Liberty Station next month, giving residents the opportunity to help the San Diego Humane Society in its mission to care for the county’s stray pets and injured wild animals.

The event, scheduled for May 2 at NTC Park, is a tradition that draws thousands of supporters to help raise money used to purchase food, provide medical care and help pay for shelter provided to animals throughout the year at the Humane Society’s local campuses.

“This event is one of the most fun events that we have all year, because we have the community gathering for a common cause,” said organization spokesperson Nina Thompson. “We all believe in supporting animals who need us. You’re essentially there with your animal-loving friends walking, which is great for everyone.”

Thompson said the goal this year was to raise approximately $350,000 for the nearly 40,000 homeless pets and injured wildlife that come through the Humane Society’s four shelters annually.

“Last year we had just over 4,000 walkers and raised $300,000,” Thompson said. “We truly hope to beat that this year, as we have 22% more animals this year compared to last. The biggest increase is with dogs, up nearly 25%. At the same time, adoption rates are down 10%.”

Thompson said that, as of Monday, the organization’s early walk sign-ups and donations had raised $221,000, or 63% of its goal.

At this year’s event, participants can choose between a full 2-mile route or a shorter half-mile stroll. A complimentary breakfast kicks off the festivities at 7 a.m., and attendees will be able to bring their pets and visit with various vendors.

The event will also include an “adoption alley,” where the organization’s rescue partners will bring adoptable pets.

“It’s such a fun morning,” Thompson said. “Everybody’s in a good mood, listening to music and tails are wagging. And every single step is a step for animals.”

Pre-registration for the event is already underway and includes a walker packet which contains information for the day of the walk, a bib, a ticket that can be exchanged for a T-shirt, a ticket for the pancake breakfast and a donation envelope.

Individual adult sign-ups cost $40, and children and virtual walk participants are $20. Online event registration closes at 5 p.m. May 1.

People can sign up on the day of the event starting at 7 a.m., but it will cost participants an extra $10.
