BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A 40-year-old Frazier Park man, identified as a Kern County Fire Department firefighter, was airlifted to the hospital with severe injuries after a solo-vehicle crash on Highway 99 Tuesday morning, while on his way to work.

The California Highway Patrol said on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at around 8:48 a.m., officers were called to a solo-vehicle crash in the area of northbound Highway 99 at Sandrini Road.

CHP said a preliminary investigation found that a 40-year-old man from Frazier Park, and sole occupant, was driving a 2004 Toyota Tacoma northbound on Highway 99, south of Sandrini Road at an unknown rate of speed.

According to CHP, the driver made an unsafe turn onto the shoulder and overturned into a vineyard.

The driver sustained major injuries, but non-life-threatening, according to CHP. He was airlifted to Kern Medical.

CHP said DUI is not believed to be a factor.

The roadway was only closed momentarily.

The Kern County Fire Department confirmed a Kern County Fire Department firefighter was involved in the crash. Officials said he was driving to work.

KCFD said the firefighter remains hospitalized with serious injuries in stable condition.
