Authorities in California have identified the suspect accused of fatally shooting a sheriff’s deputy before leading officers on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday named the suspect as 47-year-old Angelo Jose Saldivar, a resident of San Bernardino. Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Saldivar was hospitalized in stable condition after crashing on the 210 Freeway in Ontario on Monday. The crash followed what officials described as a “legal intervention” by an off-duty deputy.

Deputy Andrew Nunez, 28, was shot and killed while responding to reports of a domestic violence incident on the 12300 block of Hollycock Street in Rancho Cucamonga around 12:37 pm local time on Monday, October 27.

According to Sheriff Dicus, Saldivar allegedly shot Nunez in the head before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle. He is said to have reached speeds of up to 200 miles per hour, driving aggressively on the eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway and at times crossing into oncoming traffic.

At about 1:35 pm local time, Saldivar reportedly collided with the back of another vehicle on the freeway near Campus Avenue while reaching into a backpack, ejecting him from the motorcycle. He was taken to hospital under police custody.

District Attorney Jason Anderson said his office is treating the case as the murder of a peace officer, adding that additional charges could be filed before Saldivar’s arraignment. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office has not yet announced formal charges.

Sheriff Dicus said further details will be released regarding the domestic violence incident that Deputy Nunez had been responding to prior to the shooting.

No other information about Saldivar has been made public as the investigation continues.
