In San Francisco, we’re always on the lookout for new sounds and experiences to take in—and honestly, in this economy, it’s even better when it doesn’t cost anything. Lucky for us, the city is packed with talent, and some of its best musicians are actually stepping out to play free shows this summer. That includes the incredible Jazz Mafia, who are hosting a series of free concerts.
Jazz Mafia is a genre-blending collective that throws jazz, hip-hop, classical, and electronic music into the same space—and somehow makes it all work seamlessly. With around 50 rotating members who break off into smaller ensembles, every performance has its own personality. They’ve also worked with artists like Roy Ayers, which gives you a sense of the level they’re operating at. And, for those wanting to go even deeper into the city’s jazz scene, The Jazz Room is also curating a lineup of additional jazz-focused nights throughout the season.
Here’s what Jazz Mafia are putting on for free this summer

Coming up first, we have the “Mechanics Monument Plaza – Weekly Free Concert Series,” which is exactly what it sounds like. Every Wednesday from noon to 2pm throughout spring, summer, and fall, Jazz Mafia will be gathering at this central plaza and performing world-class jazz for the community. These concerts offer the perfect break from the office during lunchtime, or just a great spontaneous Wednesday afternoon activity. Honestly, what other city lets you sit outdoors and listen to some of the best jazz musicians it has to offer?

Alternatively, for those in Oakland looking for a bit of city escapism, Jazz Mafia is hosting free concerts in a beautiful garden in one of the city’s historic neighborhoods. “Gritty Soul Jazz” by BBone (Jazz Mafia) takes place in the garden at Swan’s Market on the third Thursday of every month between 5–7pm. At this gig, food and drinks are also available, with set specials running throughout the evening. Note that this series debuts on May 21st.
