History

SAN DIEGO — UC San Diego baseball fell to the University of San Diego, 6-5, in 10 innings on Tuesday evening in Fowler Park. The Tritons (16-20) and Toreros (14-23) played their fourth extra-inning game in the last six meetings, with five of those games being decided by one run. The season series finished 1-1 with both games going to 10 innings and resulting in a walk-off victory for the home team.
 
Nathaniel Widelski led UC San Diego with two runs scored and three RBI, highlighted by a two-run home run. The true freshman recorded his first collegiate hit and first collegiate home run in the contest. Thomas Maher recorded a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Raphael Dunne tallied two stolen bases during his time on base, reaching after being hit by a pitch twice and scoring a run.
 
Nathan Ries started on the mound for the Tritons, pitching 4.0 innings while allowing six hits and two earned runs, striking out one and walking one. Quincey Brown pitched effectively, striking out three batters over two innings while allowing just one earned run. Catcher Cal Elvis contributed a perfect inning in his first pitching appearance for the Tritons, retiring all three batters he faced. Jake Villar (0-3) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
USD was first to strike, scoring two runs on a double down the left field line in the third inning to make it 2-0. The Tritons responded an inning later, loading the bases with one out before Ujimori reached on a fielder’s choice and a fielding error scored Widelski from third. UC San Diego attempted a sac fly but the runner was thrown out at home for a double play that ended the inning, 2-1.
 
UC San Diego took the lead in the fifth inning with a two-run homer from Widelski, his first of the season, bringing Dunne home and putting the Tritons ahead 3-2 through five innings.
 
In the seventh inning, Widelski extended UC San Diego’s lead with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Maher and making it 4-2. The Toreros responded in the bottom half, scoring on a groundout, narrowing the lead to 4-3.
 
The eighth inning saw UC San Diego get the run back to lead 5-3 when Shane Cannon scored from first base on a double by Maher. However, USD quickly equalized with a two-run homer, tying the game at 5-5.
 
Despite opportunities in the ninth inning, UC San Diego and USD remained tied with no additional runs scored, sending the game into extra innings.
 
In the 10th inning, the Tritons loaded the bases with no outs via a walk, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice bunt that reached on a USD throwing error. However, UC San Diego was unable to bring in a run, keeping the game knotted at 5-all.
 
In the bottom of the inning, the Toreros hit a leadoff double down the right field line and eventually scored the game-winning run on a two-out single up the middle, securing a 6-5 victory for USD.
