SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The city of San Diego has officially voted to remove Cesar Chavez’s name from a city holiday and street in Barrio Logan.

The San Diego City Council approved an amendment to the city’s municipal code on Tuesday to rename the holiday on March 31 to ‘Farmworkers Day.’

It also voted to rename Cesar E. Chavez Parkway in Barrio Logan to Chicano Park Boulevard.

The move follows California Governor Gavin Newsom’s renaming of the statewide holiday last month after sexual abuse allegations surfaced about the late labor movement icon.

A New York Times investigation published on March 20 revealed that Chavez had sexually abused several young girls over the course of several years while leading the United Farm Workers (UFW) movement.

Civil rights leaders and UFW leader Dolores Huerta also came out and said that Chavez had sexually assaulted her and fathered two of her children.

The bombshell allegations forced institutions throughout San Diego to reexamine the mark left by Chavez on the city, renaming schools, covering up statues and cancelling events created in his honor.

Mayor Todd Gloria issued an executive order on March 20 that required San Diego city offices to make a unified effort to remove references to Chavez in city programs, facilities and public assets.

In a news release, the mayor’s office said that over the past month, several community meetings were held to gather input about renaming the street in Barrio Logan, which is now Chicano Park Boulevard. Nearby property owners were notified of the name change.

A process has also been started to officially rename the Cesar Chavez Community Center to the San Ysidro Larsen Field Community Center, the news release said.

“The farmworkers movement was a foundational part of the Chicano Movement, rooted in the fight for dignity and justice for workers across California and beyond,” said Mayor Gloria in the news release. “In San Diego, that legacy is reflected in Barrio Logan and Chicano Park, which remain enduring symbols of community identity and cultural history. This renaming of the City holiday, as well as Cesar Chavez Parkway to Chicano Park Boulevard, reflects that history and ensures our civic assets align with our values.”
