A citywide push for cleaner travel brings free transit options to Angelenos
Earth Day just got a whole lot greener – and cheaper. Metro and Metrolink are rolling out free rides across Los Angeles today, nudging riders toward a more sustainable way to get around.
Angelenos will have access to buses, trains and Metro Micro, a rideshare service located in eight zones in L.A. County, from Wednesday until 3 a.m. Thursday.
For Metrolink access, no tickets are required. Riders can travel on any train line by simply stepping aboard and claiming a seat.
“As high gas prices continue to put a strain on communities across the region, we encourage Southern Californians to ride for free on April 22 and discover the ease of climbing aboard one of our trains to get where they’re going,” Metrolink Board Chair Doug Chaffee said.

In addition to access to public transportation, Metro will allow 30-minute free rides on any Metro Bike, which can be claimed multiple times throughout the day. The ride can be redeemed with the promo code 042226 through either the Metro Bike Share kiosk, online or in the Metro Bike Share app.
By allowing city residents to explore Metro’s numerous modes of transportation, the public transit system aims to inspire more people to reduce their environmental footprints beyond Earth Day.
Metro is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saying it has cut greenhouse gas emissions from its vehicles and facilities by nearly 68% since 2017 and remains on track to meet its goal of a 79% reduction by 2030.

Earth Day Events in Los Angeles Today
The 5th Annual Earth Day Venice Beach Cleanup will take place at Del Rey Lagoon from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cleanup is hosted by Ecological Servants Project, and tickets for the event are a $10 minimum donation.
A Cinema + Climate: Earth Day Film Discussion will be hosted at Barnsdall Art Park at 5 p.m. The free event encourages attendees to bring their favorite environmental film references, a blanket and snacks, ready to discuss Los Angeles’ climate future.
A free golden-hour yoga session will be hosted in Long Beach from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in celebration of Earth Day. Yogees can snag a reservation for the event on Eventbrite. A social hour will follow, located at the restaurant Grill ‘Em All.
Alma Reaves Woods – Watts Branch Library is hosting a free pot-decorating event from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the library. Attendees will leave not only with a decorated pot, but also with a succulent.
Descanso Gardens is hosting a series of events for Earth Day from 1 p.m. to 6:15 p.m., all of which are included for members or with an admission ticket into the gardens. RSVP is required for the Knitwear Mending Workshop and the DIY Soil Bioremediation Workshop.
On Saturday, April 25, Los Angeles Waterkeeper will host an LA River Earth Day Cleanup from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. In addition to picking up trash, activities such as making native plant seed balls and assisting in water quality tests will occur.
