A man and woman were found dead inside a parked car in West Berkeley’s Aquatic Park on Sunday morning, the Berkeley Police Department said.
Just before 11 a.m. Sunday, emergency personnel were dispatched to the southern end of the sprawling park off Interstate 80 after a caller reported a “horrible” smell coming from a car, department spokesperson Officer Byron White said.
Police located the deceased man and woman when they arrived. They also found a plastic bag full of “unknown white powder,” which White said raised the possibility of a fatal overdose.
The Alameda County Coroner has yet to determine the cause and manner of death, a spokesperson for the coroner’s office said. The name of one of the victims was withheld Tuesday afternoon pending notification of their next of kin, while the other victim had not yet been identified.
