(KRON) — A young boy who was walking in the driveway of a San Jose apartment complex on Tuesday afternoon was fatally struck by a driver in a minivan, according to the San Jose Police Department.

The driveway collision occurred around 4:23 p.m. at Canoas Garden Townhomes in the 2100 block of Canoas Garden Avenue, just west of the Almaden Expressway. First responders transported the boy to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

A preliminary investigation determined that a man driving a gray 2021 Toyota minivan was traveling northbound in the parking area when he struck the boy, SJPD said. The driver remained at the scene to cooperate with detectives.

Police said Wednesday that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash.

The identity of the boy was not immediately available.

The incident marks San Jose’s seventh pedestrian death and 16th fatal collision of the year.
