A driver struck and killed a 1-year-old boy in the parking lot of a San Jose apartment complex Tuesday afternoon, the San Jose Police Department said.

At around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a traffic collision near the 2100 block of Canoas Garden. Their preliminary investigation found that a man driving a gray Toyota minivan had been traveling north on the apartment complex’s driveway when he struck a toddler walking through the parking lot.

The boy was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s office identified the victim as 1-year-old Olivier Carmelo Sgarlata.

The driver, whose name was not released, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Alcohol or drugs were not believed to be a factor in the crash, police said.

The incident marks San Jose’s 16th fatal collision of the year, as well as the city’s seventh pedestrian death.
