A busy second inning forced Griffin Canning from his fourth rehab start with Triple-A El Paso. It did not torpedo the Chihuahuas’ chances.

Nick Schnell’s second homer was a walk-off job, sending El Paso to a 13-11 win over Reno in 10 innings on Wednesday.

Schnell (.911 OPS) drove in three runs on three hits, including third and fourth homers of the year.

Center fielder Samad Taylor (.843 OPS) and shortstop Clay Dungan (.727 OPS) hit their third homers of the year and second baseman Nate Mondou (.547 OPS) hit his second homer.

Dungan collected four hits and designated hitter Sung-Mun Song (.689 OPS) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a walk.

Canning turned in a one-two-three first inning before throwing 31 of his 45 pitches while recording just two outs in the second inning. Canning walked two and allowed two runs on three hits. He did not struck out a batter.

Canning has a 5.40 ERA, 14 strikeouts and 11 walks in 10 innings across four rehab starts in his push to return from last year’s season-ending Achilles surgery. He is aiming to join the Padres rotation next month but has yet to throw more than 51 pitches or 3 1/3 innings in his starts.

Left-hander Yuki Matsui (4.05 ERA), who is rehabbing a groin injury, allowed a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Right-hander Alek Jacob (1-0, 1.74 ERA) allowed a run in 2 ⅓ innings in relief in the win.

Gutierrez sidelined

Left-hander Luis Gutierrez has been placed on Double-A San Antonio’s seven-day injured list with shoulder discomfort and is expected to miss some time.

Gutierrez has a 3.75 ERA, 13 strikeouts and an 0.92 WHIP across 12 innings to start the season.

Gutierrez, 22, is No. 20 in MLB.com’s top Padres prospects rankings. He started the Padres’ Spring Breakout prospect showcase in spring training and posted a 3.31 ERA in 125 innings across four levels, the bulk of it at high Single-A Fort Wayne.
