Holy Sheets indeed!
On his 30th birthday Gavin Sheets hit a 3-run home run down the line in right field, giving the Padres the lead in the 9th inning in a wild comeback win.
San Diego scored 5 runs in the 9th inning and 1 in the 8th inning to rally from an 8-4 deficit in the final 2 innings, beating the Colorado Rockies 10-8.
The Padres trailed 8-5 entering the ninth inning before Xander Bogaerts and Miguel Andujar hit RBI singles, cutting the deficit to a run. Then, with runners on first and third, Sheets launched a slider 379 feet over the right field wall for his third homer of the season. Making for a very happy birthday for the Padres slugger.
San Diego’s Mason Miller earned his Major League Baseball best ninth save of the season and extended his scoreless streak to 33 ⅔ innings. That ties Cla Meredith for the longest run in Padres franchise history. The 27-year-old right-hander is tied for the eighth-longest scoreless streak by a reliever in the Expansion Era (since 1961).
With the win the Padres remain tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers atop the National League West, with an MLB best 17-8 record.
The Padres are off Friday, before playing Arizona in Mexico City this Saturday and Sunday.
