A man accused of posing as a police officer to rob a Cupertino spa has been arrested after a weeklong investigation by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, authorities said Thursday.
Brendan Kroning, 32, of San Andreas (Calaveras County) was taken into custody Wednesday in a San Jose parking garage. He faces three counts of robbery, three counts of false imprisonment and one count of impersonating a police officer.
The charges stem from an April 15 robbery at Sunny Spa on South De Anza Boulevard. Police said Kroning entered the business dressed like he worked in law enforcement and carrying what appeared to be a handgun. He told employees he was a police officer conducting an inspection, authorities said.
Kroning then allegedly unplugged the spa’s security cameras and told employees to open the cash register. He then took a large amount of cash, ran to a car parked in a nearby alley and drove off before deputies were called, police said.
After a follow-up investigation, Kroning was identified as a suspect and then arrested. Police said they found evidence linking him to the robbery while searching his car.
