Big Dog show

Big Dog Vineyards in Milpitas will host Jim Stevens and Friends in a free concert of acoustic music on Saturday, May 2, 1-4 p.m. on the winery’s outdoor patio.

The group includes lead singer/songwriter Jim Stevens, guitarist Mark Harville, bassist Debra Harville and Lee Kopp on harmonica. The quartet is known for its four-part vocal harmonies and has been the opening act on the main stage at the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival for the past 30 years. The band covers artists from the Beatles to the Grateful Dead to Lucinda Williams, with original tunes by Stevens.

Big Dog is noted for its small-batch, handcrafted wines. The winery is located at 4545 Felter Road in Milpitas.

Building skills

Angel Garcia from Calaveras High School in Milpitas was on a team that medaled at at the 2026 SkillsUSA California State Leadership and Skills Conference from April 9-12 in Ontario, CA. Garcia and his team took silver in the Chapter Business Procedure category.

Garcia was among 14 teams and individual students from Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) to earn a medal at the conference. Almost 140 SVCTE students competed in the annual event, which brings together more than 4,000 of the state’s top career technical education competitors.

The conference featured more than 120 contests spanning skilled trades, technical fields and leadership development. Students applied what they’ve learned in the classroom to hands-on, real-world scenarios that mirror industry expectations.
