Oceanside police were investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash on Sunday after a mortally injured man was found along state Route 76, officials said.
Someone called 911 shortly before 11 a.m. to report finding a man who was not breathing near the westbound lanes of SR-76 near Signh Way. Firefighters responded and found the man, but he could not be revived.
The victim, believed to be in his 20s, had “obvious injuries consistent with being in a traffic collision,” although it was unclear when he had been struck, said police Lt. Bill Weese.
For several hours, police shut down the westbound lanes of SR-76 between Old River Road to Signh Way as officers looked for evidence in the roadway. The lanes were reopened around 3 p.m.
No other information was immediately released.
