Clarkston’s boys and Rochester Adams’ girls captured regional cross country championships and both were among the teams to advance to state from the meet held Friday, Oct. 24 at Clintonwood Park.
Quality showed in the scores of the girls race where Adams won a tiebreaker for first after Rochester equaled the Highlanders with 50 points. Clarkston also qualified for state with its third-place finish (66 points). Those three teams had individuals occupying all but two of the top 11 finishers.
This year’s Oakland County meet winner, junior El McMahan, also was tops at the regional (17:40.40), and was followed on her team by Jessica Soldan (5th, 18:28.30), Abigail Deering (7th, 19:05.10), Cecilia Kreiter (16th, 19:52.50) and Ava Thomas (20:14.30).
Rochester’s Ella Abraham (18:22.40) and Charlotte Jones (18:24.30) finished back-to-back in third and fourth, Taylor Parsons came eighth (19:15.50), then Adrienne Jones (19:56.70) and Maren Greve (19:57.30) took 17th and 18th for the Falcons, respectively.
Clarkston’s qualifying quintet was Sydney Fischer (9th, 19:16.10), Avery DeGrendel (10th, 19:17.30), Annabelle Shaw (19:21.80), Amelia Garvin (13th, 19:25.00) and Kendal Russette (20:17.10).
Led by second-place finisher Leah Corby, Stoney Creek took fourth in the girls race (111 points), followed by Lake Orion (5th, 140), Troy (6th, 167), Oxford (7th, 172), Troy Athens (9th, 247) and Waterford Kettering (10th, 296).
In the boys race, Clarkston’s Ryan Barnes (15:30.60) beat out teammate David Dubeck (15:32.60) for first place to help their team also claim the top spot with 37 points. Also helping the Wolves claim first were Cooper McNaughton (5th, 15:50.10), Vern Clyne (13th, 16:20.80) and Miles Foster (16th, 16.25.20).
Rochester took second place with 100 points scored by Evan Owczarek (6th, 15:59.20), Dylan Pascoe (7th, 15:59.70), Lucas Campbell (15th, 16:22.30), Connor McLaughlin (32nd, 17:06.40) and Alonso San Vicente Lugo (40th, 16:21.80).
A tiebreaker over Lake Orion (113 points) won Oxford qualification in third place, and scores from the Wildcats included Matthew Buchanan (12th, 16:20.50), Ethan Christoff (16:26.40), Cayden Canham (23rd, 16:42.30), Brady Bigelow (25th, 16:50.10) and Carter Jacobsen (36th, 17:10.30).
Following the Dragons in fourth were Rochester Adams (5th, 121 points), Troy (6th, 126), Troy Athens (7th, 165), Stoney Creek (8th, 183) and Waterford Kettering (11th, 351).
Oakland County’s girls individual qualifiers included: Stoney Creek’s Leah Corby (2nd, 18:05.60), Troy’s Audrey Hamilton (6th, 18:36.10), Oxford’s Sienna Chapin (12th, 19:23.50), Lake Orion’s Linda Lopez (14th, 19:25.90), Stoney Creek’s Tessa Kozlowski (15th, 19:52.30) and Lake Orion’s Natalie Meldrum (19th, 20:04.20).
Oakland County’s boys individual qualifiers included: Lake Orion’s Max Houvener (3rd, 15:13.70), Troy Athens’ Nathaniel Linden (4th, 15:46.80), Adams’ Gavin Wilkins (8th, 16:05.70), Adams’ Oscar Wordell (9th, 16:06.30), Stoney Creek’s Aidan Schwalbach (10th, 16:16.20), Troy’s Asa Konwinski (11th, 16:19.20), Lake Orion’s Luis Nava (14th, 16:21.20) and Stoney Creek’s Joseph Leigh (19th, 16:30.40).
All state finals will be held this Saturday at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.
Division 1 regional at Holly
Milford’s girls took sixth (183 points) and Holly’s came ninth (228), while Milford’s boys came second, earning state qualification, and Holly’s ended sixth at the meet in Mount Pleasant.
The Mavericks were led by first and second-place finishers Kyle O’Rourke (15:31.66) and Todd Tobin (15:41.52), followed by Gannon Wheeler (12th, 15:59.64), Josh Sanchez (25th, 16:20.27) and Rowan Dehority (33rd, 16:35.58).
Oakland County’s boys individual qualifiers included: Holly’s Broden Ladd (14th, 16:01.36).
Oakland County’s girls individual qualifiers included: Holly’s Maddie Lindley (2nd, 17:39.52), Holly’s Julia Bambach (8th, 18:38.37) and Milford’s Jillian Broyles (13th, 18:56.71).
Division 1 regional at DeWitt
South Lyon East came ninth place and South Lyon finished 10th in both races.
Oakland County’s boys individual qualifiers included: South Lyon East’s Nikhil Ball (9th, 15:58.43)
No Oakland County girls were individual qualifiers from this region.
Division 1 regional at Ann Arbor Huron
Oak Park’s boys came ninth and its girls took sixth in the race held at Willow Metropark.

Division 1 regional at Royal Oak
Northville’s boys, headed by Brandon Cloud, owned the top four individual spots at last Saturday’s Region 7 meet, where Lakeland (91 points) and Detroit Catholic Central (98) also earned state qualification.
Lakeland’s qualifying effort was achieved by Gavin Johns (8th, 16:19.40), Lucas Naspinsky (16th, 16:46.50), Brenden Humitz (17th, 16:48.10), Owen Nelms (18th, 16:51.40) and Tyler Johns (32nd, 17:18.00).
Detroit Catholic Central’s times included Brady Glon (7th, 16:12.10), Gavin Tisch (13th, 15:35.20), Luke Kramer (21st, 16:58.20), Jacob Slankster (24th, 17:01.50) and Oliver Borek (17:23.50).
Behind the top trio were Walled Lake Northern (4th, 133 points), Novi (5th, 151), Royal Oak (6th, 158), West Bloomfield (7th, 220), Farmington (8th, 251), Berkley (9th, 255), North Farmington (10th, 260), Bloomfield Hills (11th, 275), Walled Lake Western (12th, 295), Birmingham Groves (13th, 311), Brother Rice (14th, 336), Birmingham Seaholm (15th, 401) and Walled Lake Central (16th, 486).
Led by first-place finisher Alexandra Scappaticci, Northville also dominated the girls race in Royal Oak, where Novi came second (87 points) and Lakeland came third (120).
Team-wise, Lakeland was followed by Bloomfield Hills (4th, 122 points), Royal Oak (5th, 156), Farmington (6th, 158), Berkley (7th, 193), Groves (8th, 197), Seaholm (9th, 211), Walled Lake Northern (10th, 264), Walled Lake Central (11th, 303), North Farmington (12th, 340), West Bloomfield (13th, 379) and Walled Lake Western (14th, 384).
Novi’s top qualifiers were Katelynn Egli (4th, 18:49.20), Claire Galas (17th, 19:25.10), Ella German (19th, 19:34.20), Laura Jonas (22nd, 19:37.30) and Mya Tass (25th, 19:48.00).
Lakeland’s efforts were headed by Maya Pletzer (10th, 19:04.00), Morgan Scally (13th, 19:14.20), Gabby Marino (30th, 20:04.00), Olivia Mustonen (33rd, 20:16.70) and Isabelle Verellen (34th, 20:17.80).
Oakland County’s boys individual qualifiers included: Walled Lake Northern’s Finn Gammerath (5th, 16:02.70), Brother Rice’s Nolan Collins (6th, 16:07.00), Farmington’s Devin Lau (9th, 16:20.70), Novi’s Trevor Baptist (10th, 16:21.90), Walled Lake Northern’s Nikola Dahlgren (12th, 16:30.70) and Royal Oak’s Beckett Sipes (14th, 16:35.60).
Oakland County’s girls individual qualifiers included: Groves’ Giada Mills (2nd, 18:33.30), Seaholm’s Alexandra Green (5th, 18:50.60), Bloomfield Hills’ Claire Lawrence (6th, 18:54.00), Berkley’s Paige Rohda (9th, 19:01.80), Farmington’s Katelyn Parrish (12th, 19:06.50), Royal Oak’s Anna Macdonald (14th, 19:15.40) and Farmington’s Kierra Magner (15th, 19:20.80).
Division 2 regional at Shepherd
Ortonville Brandon’s boys took eighth at the Region 15 competition on Saturday.
Oakland County’s boys individual qualifiers included: Brandon’s Jacob Hylton (7th, 16:09.30).
No Oakland County girls were individual qualifiers from this region.
Division 2 regional at Linden
Bloomfield Hills Marian’s girls qualified for state with a third-place finish of 101 points and Country Day’s boys also took third to qualify from Linden.
From the boys race, Country Day’s best finishes included Omar Elbashir (3rd, 16:31.68), Jack Hincks (5th, 16:43.53), Ethan Bray (12th, 17:24.91), Hari Varma (14th, 17:27.39) and Adam Ahmad (27th, 18:23.42).
Behind DCD, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s came sixth (176 points), Pontiac Notre Dame Prep was seventh (207), Madison Heights Lamphere (256) took ninth, Cranbrook-Kingswood (283) came 10th and Pontiac finished 14th (423).
Following Marian in the girls race were ND Prep (6th, 151 points), Farmington Hills Mercy (7th, 168), Cranbrook-Kingswood (8th, 223), Lamphere (9th, 251), Country Day (10th, 259) and St. Mary’s (12th, 272).
Oakland County’s boys individual qualifiers included: St. Mary’s Cole Wisniewski (4th, 16:39.99) and ND Prep’s Andrew Nunning (11th, 17:22.20).
Oakland County’s girls individual qualifiers included: Lamphere’s Hannah Haines (9th, 20:11.77), Cranbrook-Kingswood’s Diya Goyal (13th, 20:27.47) and Mercy’s Nora Gerzema (17th, 20:47.43).
Division 3 regional at Algonac
Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest’s boys came fourth (137 points), Clawson took 10th (224) and Bishop Foley ended 11th in Algonac, while the Crusaders’ girls came seventh (176) and the Trojans’ girls finished 10th (254) in Algonac.
Oakland County’s boys individual qualifiers included: Nole Lorenzen (1st, 15:44.60), Clawson’s Owen Windgaston (12th, 16:36.67) and Lutheran Northwest’s Jack Songer (15th, 16:41.15).
Oakland County’s girls individual qualifiers included: Lutheran Northwest’s Piper Lyon (13th, 20:57.44).
Division 4 regional at Webberville
Novi Christian Academy’s girls took third with 100 points to qualify for state from the meet held last Friday in Webberville.
The Warriors’ top handful included Madison Markowicz (15th, 21:31.52), Evelyn McIndoe (16th, 22:02.62), Nadia Barnes (20th, 22:28.36), Miriam Jiran (26th, 23:22.02) and Brooklynn Dubac (31st, 24:01.36).
Clarkston Everest Collegiate’s girls ended fifth place with 121 points.
Also in Webberville, Novi Christian Academy’s boys came fourth place with 88 points and Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes ended in eighth with 178.
Oakland County’s boys individual qualifiers included: Novi Christian Academy’s Reuben Jiran (4th, 17:06.69), Novi Christian Academy’s Jackson Onofre (15th, 18:00.18) and Our Lady of the Lakes’ Nathan Camilleri (16th, 18:05.49).
Oakland County’s girls individual qualifiers included: Everest Collegiate’s Allison Schmitt (8th, 21:13.26).
Division 4 regional at Royal Oak
Royal Oak Shrine led the charge in Region 36, winning both the boys (45 points) and girls (40) race, with Southfield Christian also taking third in the girls race to qualify for state with 73 points.
Additionally in the boys race, Southfield Christian came in fifth with 124 points.
Shrine’s boys were headed by race winner Abenezer Cerone (16:04.60), Michael Bowker (5th, 17:12.60), Andrew Lopez (13th, 17:55.10), Will Bernacki (16th, 18:11.40) and Gabe Shaffer (21st, 18:47.40).
Ella Lamb of Shrine won the race in 20:22.40, and she was followed by teammates Josephine Malcolm (6th, 22:15.80), Louisa Denks (13th, 23:26.30), Nora Tillman (18th, 24:16.30) and Cecila Bomberski (19th, 24:26.10).
The top five racers from Southfield Christian were Ella Clarke (11th, 22:53.20), Caramia DeGiulio (12th, 23:07.20), Faith Dawson (24th, 24:51.80), Avery Trepod (30th, 26:16.90) and Abi Jackson (34th, 26:49.00).
Oakland County’s boys individual qualifiers included: Southfield Christian’s Joseph Stevens (12th, 17:52.80) and Lamark Johnson (15th, 17:57.10).
Oakland County’s girls individual qualifiers included: Auburn Hills Oakland Christian’s Yadhira Thomassen (7th, 22:31.80) and Katherine Riches (14th, 23:34.80).
