SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks centerman Macklin Celebrini will reportedly play for Team Canada at next month’s IIHF World Championship in Switzerland.

Celebrini will join fellow NHL stars Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets and New York Islanders Mat Barzal, both forwards, and Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly on Team Canada, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.

Forward Gavin McKenna, believed to be one of the top players available in June’s NHL Draft, has also committed to play. McKenna had 15 goals and 36 assists in 35 games as a freshman for Penn State this past season.

After the Sharks’ season ended, a fatigued Celebrini said on April 18 that he was not sure if he would make himself available to once again play for Canada. Celebrini played all 82 games for the Sharks this season and led the team in average ice time per game, and also played for Canada at the Winter Olympics in Italy in February, capturing a silver medal.

Celebrini finished the season as the NHL’s fourth-leading scorer with 115 points, setting a new Sharks single-season franchise record.

“Part of wanting to stay healthy all year, playing all 82 games, it takes a toll, and it’s a little tiring,” Celebrini said. “So I’ve just got to kind of do what’s best for me and what prepares me best for next season.”

This marks the second straight year that Celebrini will play at the World Championship.

Celebrini played alongside his childhood idol, Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, in last year’s tournament in Europe and had six points in eight games. But Canada lost 2-1 to co-host Denmark in the quarterfinals.

The American team, which included Sharks forward Will Smith and was coached by Ryan Warsofsky, captured the gold medal at the tournament for the first time in 92 years.

Smith, though, said last weekend that he would not be returning to the World Championship, and this year’s American team has former Buffalo Sabres head coach Don Granato behind the bench. Thomas Speer, the Sharks’ goalie coach, will be Team USA’s goalie coach for the third time in four years.

Center Alex Wennberg, the Sharks’ third-leading scorer with 55 points, four points behind Smith, also said he will not be taking part in the World Championship for the fourth time in his career. He helped Sweden win bronze at last year’s tournament in his hometown of Stockholm and was also on the country’s Olympic roster.

“It’s a lot of complex things that I’m not going to get into,” Wennberg said of not playing in this year’s World Championship. “For me, the focus is going to be on next season, and getting ready for that.”

This year’s World Championship will take place in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland, from May 15 to 31.

The American team will compete in Group A with Austria, Finland, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Latvia, and host Switzerland in the preliminary round at the Swiss Life Arena in Zurich. Canada is in Group B with Czechia, Denmark, Italy, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia and Sweden, and will play its preliminary round contests in Fribourg at BCF Arena.
