Oakland police fatally shot a man Monday afternoon after responding to reports of an armed individual in an East Oakland neighborhood, authorities said.
Interim Police Chief James Beere said multiple 911 calls came in around 3:50 p.m. about a man allegedly pointing a gun at people and passing cars near 89th Avenue and Birch Street.
Officers located the man shortly after arriving and confronted him. During that encounter, the man allegedly raised a weapon toward officers, prompting several of them to open fire, Beere said. The man was struck and later pronounced dead.
Police said a firearm was recovered at the scene and is believed to have been in the man’s possession. His identity has not been released.
The shooting prompted a large response, with officers closing off the intersection and surrounding blocks for several hours. The area is near International Boulevard and 90th Avenue. Evidence markers were visible at the scene, including some placed on an unmarked police vehicle.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation. Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
