OAKLAND – A man was fatally shot by officers Monday afternoon in Oakland after police say he pointed a firearm at them.
The encounter unfolded just before 4 p.m., when officers were called to the 2000 block of Auseon Avenue for reports of a man who was pointing a gun at people, according to the Oakland Police Department.
Officers found the man in the 1900 block of Auseon Avenue. Police said he pointed a gun at the officers as they approached him and they in turn called for backup.
The man then moved to a yard in the 1800 block of 89th Avenue, where he again pointed a gun at officers, police said. This time, the officers opened fire with their service weapons.
“Officers responded to the scene very quickly,” Oakland police Chief James Beere told reporters and photographers gathered near the scene. “They were able to initially make contact with the subject, but he ended up pointing the firearm at the police officers as well, at which point they discharged their firearms and struck the subject.”
The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 5 p.m.
No other injuries were reported.
A firearm believed to belong to the man was recovered at the scene, according to Beere. It was not immediately known if he fired the gun at officers during the confrontation.
Asked how many officers were involved in the shooting, Beere would only say it was “more than one.” Those officers will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard in such cases.
The police department is conducting criminal and administrative probes into the shooting. Independent investigations by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office and the Community Police Review Agency are also underway, according to police.
