Last week, I received in the mail the California Primary Election Pamphlet for the June 2 election. I was shocked to find a statement from gubernatorial candidate Don J. Grundmann which contained vicious and hateful antisemitic allegations. The pamphlet is an official document, paid for and distributed by the Secretary of State’s Office, and it’s outrageous that it is being delivered to the home of every registered voter, given that it includes material that is so deeply hateful. This is not an issue of free speech. Other candidate statements may provide false, misleading or simply stupid claims, but none take positions that are clearly inflammatory and could easily incite violence. The Secretary of State’s Office must explain why it allowed a monstrous antisemitic message to go out through official channels.
