Here are four cool ways “Star Wars” fans can celebrate May the 4th — aka, Star Wars Day — in the Bay Area. And we’re ranking them in order of coolness.
1. “Star Wars” classics in Orinda
Our top pick for celebrating Star Wars Day is to take in a three-movie marathon being shown on both May 3 and 4 at the historic Orinda Theatre. Grab some popcorn and a Diet Coke — because, well, salty snacks, caffeine and movie marathons go hand-in-hand-in-hand — and enjoy these classic films on the big screen.
Thankfully, the movie marathon consists solely of the original trilogy — “Star Wars,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” — which, let’s face it, are still the only three you really need to see.
Take note, however, that this is not a traditional movie marathon — where one ticket gets you a spot for all the films being shown. Rather, you’ll need to buy a ticket for each of the flicks. That’s nice if indeed you just want to see one or two, rather than all three.
Details: “Star Wars” (1977) screens at 1 p.m., followed by “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980) at 4 p.m. and “Return of the Jedi” (1983) at 7 p.m. on May 3 and then repeats, on the exact same schedule, on May 4. Per-movie admission is $11-$13, orindamovies.com.
2. C-3PO in, um, person
The 69th San Francisco International Film Festival winds to a close in highly appropriate fashion on May the 4th with a screening of “The Empire Strikes Back” at the recently (and wonderfully) restored Castro Theatre in San Francisco.
This special Star Wars Day screening will feature a conversation with actor Anthony Daniels, who portrayed the beloved droid C-3PO in the “Star Wars” films.
Daniels will be in conversation with Lucasfilm veteran Howard Roffman, who is also the SFFILM board vice president.
Details: Showtime is 7 p.m. on May 4, and tickets are $42-$45, sffilm.org.
3. Star Wars Trivia Night
How much do you really know about the “Star Wars” movies? Well, you can test your knowledge about a “galaxy far, far away” by attending the May the 4th Star Wars Trivia Night at Dr. Funk in downtown San Jose.
Organizers plan 40 questions all about the Skywalker Saga. There will also be a “Star Wars” costume contest — with prizes on the line for the best outfits.
Details: Event starts at 7:30 p.m. May 4, and admission is free, drfunksj.com. Ages 18 and over welcome.
4. Stormtroopers in Oakland?
Turn out to Oakland Library’s Rockridge branch for an afternoon of Star Wars Day-themed fun on May the 4th. Stormtroopers and other members of the Galactic Empire will be on hand — thanks to volunteers of the Golden Gate Garrison, a Bay Area organization that re-creates the movies’ costumes — to take pictures and hang out with kids of all ages. There will also be Star Wars-themed craft activities for the young ones in attendance.
Details: Event runs 3-4:30 p.m. May 4, oaklandlibrary.org.
