OAKLAND — A four-time felon has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting April 23 of another man in West Oakland, according to authorities and court records.
Tyrone Gobar, 55. was also charged April 24 with being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person in the killing of Farhad Farsi, 38. Farsi had addresses in both Pleasanton and Oakland, authorities said.
Gobar entered a plea of not guilty Monday and will return to court May 5 for a pre-trial hearing. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
Police said the two men did not know each other prior to the shooting, which happened about 11:05 a.m. April 23 in the 1800 block of Wood Street near Raimondi Park.
According to authorities, the shooting resulted from a physical argument the two men had that ended with Gobar allegedly shooting Farsi, who died at the scene. Police have not said what they believe the argument was about.
Gobar, who is unhoused, was identified as the suspected shooter by witnesses and surveillance video, police said. He was arrested at the scene and the pistol believed used in the shooting, which had a spent casing inside its chamber, was recovered in a vehicle he was living in, authorities said.
According to court documents, Gobar has four prior felony convictions.
The first was in January 1989 in Santa Clara County for rape by use of drugs for which he was placed on probation and ordered to register as a sex offender. Details of that case were not immediately available.
The other three were in Alameda County for being a felon in possession of a firearm in April 1993, October 1999 and January 2009. He went to prison after the 1993 and 1999 convictions and was placed on probation for the 2009 conviction, the records say.
