Groundbreaking ceremony held for new affordable housing project in Midtown Sacramento
PLANT, AND THAT’S ON NATOMAS STREET. RIGHT NOW, A GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY IS ABOUT TO START IN SACRAMENTO FOR A NEW AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMMUNITY IN MIDTOWN KCRA 3’S. LETICIA ORDAZ, WHO IS LIVE WHERE IT’S ALL HAPPENING THIS MORNING. GOOD MORNING. LETICIA. GOOD MORNING. THERE IS A LOT OF EXCITEMENT IN THE AIR. IN FACT, DOZENS OF PEOPLE ARE ALREADY HERE READY FOR THIS GROUNDBREAKING THAT’S GOING TO BRING AFFORDABLE HOUSING TO THE COMMUNITY. TO BE EXACT. 134 UNITS THAT ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED. I’M JOINED NOW BY THE CEO OF THE PROJECT, CRAIG ADELMAN, AND THIS IS A BIG DAY IN A GAME CHANGER FOR THE CAPITAL CITY. TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT WHAT THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO MEAN FOR SACRAMENTO. OH, WE’RE SO THRILLED TO BE WITH YOU AGAIN. CONTINUING TO CONTRIBUTE TO HOUSING HERE IN THE CENTRAL CORE OF SACRAMENTO WITH OUR PARTNERS, CDA CAPITAL AREA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY, MUTUAL HOUSING IS BUILDING 134 VERY AFFORDABLE UNITS RIGHT HERE IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN MIDTOWN ON THE 16TH STREET CORRIDOR, SERVING PEOPLE THAT CRITICALLY NEED THE HOUSING AND AREN’T SERVED BY THE MARKET. OTHERWISE. DEFINITELY. AND THIS IS A VERY UNIQUE USE FOR THIS SPACE BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND THIS USED TO BE AN AUTO REPAIR SHOP. SO TELL ME THE THINKING BEHIND TRANSFORMING A PROPERTY LIKE THIS. WELL, THIS IS AS I THINK EVERYBODY KNOWS, THAT’S WATCHING THIS, THIS CRITICAL REAL ESTATE HERE IN THE CITY. AND FRANKLY, AN UNDERUTILIZED AUTO SHOP IS NOT THE BEST USE WHEN WE HAVE A HOUSING CRISIS. SO NOT ONLY ARE WE ADDING HOUSING, BUT WE’RE ADDING ECONOMIC VITALITY. THIS PROJECT IS BUILT AND DESIGNED AROUND INCREDIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AS WELL. AND SO IT REALLY CONTRIBUTES TO SO MANY ASPECTS OF SACRAMENTO. AND AS PEOPLE ARE WATCHING TODAY AND WONDERING, DO I QUALIFY? CAN I MOVE IN EVENTUALLY? WHO ARE THE PERFECT CANDIDATES FOR THIS HOUSING? WELL, THESE ARE SMALL UNITS, SO THEY’RE STUDIOS, ONE BEDROOMS AND SOME TWO BEDROOM UNITS. THEY’RE TARGETED FAIRLY DEEPLY IN TERMS OF AFFORDABILITY. SO I WOULD SAY TWO PERSON HOUSEHOLDS THAT HAVE INCOMES IN THE RANGE OF 30,000 TO $60,000 ANNUALLY. CRAIG, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS EXCITING PROJECT. WE KNOW THE GROUNDBREAKING GETS TAKING PLACE LATER THIS MORNING, AND WE APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND ALL YOU’RE DOING FOR SACRAMENTO. GREAT TO BE WITH YOU. THANKS. ALL RIGHT. THIS HOUSING PROJECT SHOULD BE READY FOR THE COMMUNITY TO MOVE INTO IN MARCH OF 2027. REPORTING LIVE IN MIDTOWN LETICIA ORDAZ KCRA THREE NEWS. LETICIA, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT LIVE REPORT. THE CEO OF THE PROJECT SAYS THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECT WILL REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS
