LONG BEACH — Wilson junior sprinter Kaedyn Burroughs had his doubts but was determined to give it his all in his signature event.
Despite battling a recent injury, Burroughs dug deep and won the boys 400m title in a personal best time of 46.65 at the Moore League Track and Finals at Long Beach Poly High Thursday.
“It feels great because I was dealing with some injuries on Tuesday,” Burroughs said, “but my coach just told me to do my best, whatever I got is OK, and I overcame my fears and did my best, and it came with a pr.”
Burroughs, who now ranks No. 3 in California in the 400, said he is looking forward to fine-tuning his speed over the next several weeks of training and competitions.
“It gives me great confidence knowing I can go 46 already running it three times,” Burroughs continued. “I feel like sooner than later, I’ll keep dropping and dropping (times) until I get to that 45.”
Wilson junior sprinter Clara Adams led the Bruins girls team with victories in the 200 (23.94) and the 400 (52.80).Adams’ time of 52.80 is the fastest 400-meter time to date in California. Her personal best is 52.58.
“All that tells me is to keep training hard,” Adams said. “Don’t change anything. Whatever I’ve been doing, it’s been working, so I’m going to keep doing it.”
However, she noted that it was her first time running the 400 in under 53 seconds in April. She believes that a great sign with CIF-SS finals, CIF Masters, and the CIF State Meet coming up in May.
“I have room for growth,” Adams said, “and by state I’m hoping to run a sub-52 or even faster than that.”
Fellow Bruin junior Saniah Varnado finished second in the 400 in a personal best time of 53.19. She followed that up by winning the girls 300 hurdles in 42 seconds flat.
Wilson sophomore Brooklyn Fowler and senior Brooke Blue also ran 54.21 and 54.29, respectively, setting up the Bruins for a potential blazing time in the 4×400 during the CIF postseason.
“It actually means a lot for me for my team to be up there with me,” Adams continued. “I’m proud of myself. I’m proud of my teammates. One of my teammates just pr’d, so I’m happy for her. Overall, I think we’re doing so good and I think we’re in the right position to win.”

Poly senior Malachi Dawson led the Jackrabbits by winning the boys 100 in 10.82 and the boys 200 in 21.38.
“It means everything,” Dawson said. “Countless hours. Countless days and nights, just putting in work, grinding. Overcoming setbacks, just bouncing back, and knowing who I am.”
Dawson battled back from a season-ending injury he suffered in his sophomore year to a season-best 100m time of 10.58.
“It gives me a lot of confidence (going into CIF),” Dawson explained. “I feel like I’m a dog right now. I am an underdog. I should have been at state, so me just remembering the feeling of not getting to state, using that fire to get me to where I need to be.”
Poly’s boys team edged out Wilson in the 4×400 relay. The Jackrabbits ran 3:15.28. The Bruins finished second in 3:16.03.
Poly senior Aniyah Brooks won the girls 100 in 12.07. It was her first individual Moore League title. Her personal and season best time is 11.65.
“I’ve been wanting this all year,” Brooks said. “So I’m finally glad I was able to come out here and do this.”
Poly senior Noah Smith, who signed with USC, finished second in the 200 (21.68) and 400 (47.01).
Meanwhile, Wilson senior Wyland Obando (Mississippi State signee), the defending CIF State champion in the 800, started his signature event but did not finish because of an injury.
Wilson’s girls’ track team and the Poly boys’ team won their respective Moore League team titles.
Wilson senior Journii Spencer won the girls triple jump with a school record mark of 39 feet and 3.5 inches.
In addition to crowning local champions, the meet allowed dozens of Moore League athletes to qualify for CIF Southern Section prelims on May 9. CIF-SS Finals will be on May 16. The Masters Meet will be on May 23. The CIF State championship meet will be held May 29-30 in Clovis.
