Long Beach will celebrate Older Americans Month throughout May with a variety of free programming and events for adults who are at least 50.

Nationally recognized each May, Older Americans Month celebrates the contributions of older adults, and reaffirms commitments to uplifting these communities through inclusive and impactful programming and services, according to a city news release.

“Our older adults are an integral part of our community, and Older Americans Month is a time for us to celebrate their lasting contributions and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their health, social connections and overall well-being,” Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement. “We are dedicated to creating inclusive spaces where residents ages 50 and older can stay active, engaged and valued, throughout Older Americans Month and all year-round.”

This year’s Older Americans Month theme is “Champion Your Health,” focusing on prevention, wellness and personal responsibility as key pillars of healthy aging, and encouraging older adults to take an active role in their health.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine will host various specialty programming and events throughout the month. One of this year’s signature events includes the return of the Older Americans Blooming Talent Show from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Senior Center, 1150 E. Fourth St., on May 19, during which adults will showcase their talents.

Other events will be the Silverado Senior Carnival Extravaganza, which will take place on May 22 and feature carnival games, a live DJ and magic show, line dancing and food; a new field trip excursion to the Los Angeles County Fair on May 21; the Sustainable Independence Resource Fair on May 6; a pickleball tournament on May 9; and a movie night on May 14, among others, according to the new release.

While these events are for adults ages 50 and above, community members may attend the pickleball tournament and talent show, officials said.

Details for the complete list of events are available on the Older Adults Program webpage at lbcity.info/seniorprograms.

To stay active and healthy, older adults are encouraged to stay up to date on preventive care and screenings; build and maintain social connections that support emotional well-being; choose nutritious, minimally processed foods; incorporate regular physical activity to maintain strength and mobility; and practice daily habits that support mental health and resilience, according to the Administration for Community Living.

The Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Department’s Older Adults Program offers year-round programming and services at six locations throughout the city to keep older adults healthy, active and engaged, according to the news release.
