A Long Beach man sentenced to 22 years in prison for attacking a former coworker with an ax.

A Long Beach man was sentenced on Friday, May 1, to 22 years in prison for the attempted murder of a 60-year-old former coworker in 2025, striking him several times in the head and face with an ax and causing life-threatening injuries, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly announced.
Anthony Calvo pleaded guilty on March 20 to attempted murder.
On Feb. 13, 2025, an unidentified victim was walking home from his overnight shift as a taxi dispatcher for Long Beach Taxi, and as he walked down Arizona Avenue toward his home, Calvo ran up to him from behind and attacked him with an ax, striking him at least three times, in his face, head, and arm, Donnelly said.
After the attack, the man dragged himself to the rear yard of his home and banged on the door for help, where a family member called 911 and members of the Long Beach Police Department responded to the scene, the DA said. The man suffered serious injuries to his head and jaw, requiring multiple surgeries, Donnelly said.
Calvo was previously employed at Long Beach Taxi as a driver and stopped working there in 2022, she said.
Surveillance video obtained showed Calvo fleeing the scene on a white electronic bicycle and wearing dark clothing, and a search warrant of his apartment, executed on Feb. 19, 2025, located the bicycle and mask, Donnelly said.
Calvo was arrested on March, 12, 2025, she said.
“Calvo will spend the next two decades in prison, but his ruthless actions condemned an innocent man to round-the-clock medical care and a very long road to recovery,” Donnelly said after the sentencing.
