Weeks after being hospitalized due to an unspecified illness, Zayn Malik has canceled all of his U.S. tour dates, including a Bay Area appearance.
The former One Direction musician didn’t elaborate on his condition, but explained he’s had “to take another look at my schedule for the months ahead and have to reduce the number of shows on the KONNAKOL Tour,” according to his Instagram story posted on Friday, May 1.
Malik’s scheduled performance at San Francisco’s Chase Center on Sept. 2 is among the stops cut from tour, though he still plans to proceed with a handful of shows in the U.K. and Mexico later this month.
“I’ve been at home recovering and I’m doing well and will be better and stronger than before,” he wrote.
The U.S. leg of the “Pillowtalk” singer’s tour was set to begin at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena on July 19.
Malik’s announcement comes two weeks after he posted a selfie from a hospital bed to social media, telling fans he is “unexpectedly recovering” from a health scare. The photo was shared on April 17, the same day his fifth studio album, “Konnakol,” was released.
Malik’s hospital stint forced him to cancel several album release events.
“To my fans: Thank you so much for all the support and love you’ve shown me on the album release and more importantly your love, prayers, and well wishes for my health,” he wrote Friday morning. “I’ve felt it, and it’s meant the world.”
In a follow-up post that same day, Malik shared an updated tour poster with the international dates and cities he is still scheduled to perform, including several South American shows in October.
While he won’t be bringing his tour to U.S. fans, Malik did play a number of shows for American fans in January during his Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM.
“I want to make sure I still get out and see as many of you as I possibly can. I’m really looking forward to playing these shows for you,” Malik wrote, in reference to the international dates he still plans to play. “I hope to see the rest of you around the world very soon. Big Love, Z.”
The musician rose to fame as a member of One Direction, the British boy band formed on the reality competition show “The X Factor” in 2010. The quintet, which also included Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, broke out with the hit “What Makes You Beautiful.” Malik left the group in 2015 to pursue a solo career, and the group announced an indefinite hiatus later that year. He has since been open about his anxiety and other mental health challenges over the years.
