Meet droids and go ga-ga over Grogu at the Academy Museum’s ‘Star Wars’ bash – NBC Los Angeles

If Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue were a planet, or perhaps a mysterious moon, we’ll guess that all sorts of wonders would exist on the surface, including some museums, some neon, and, in the distance, extremely old tar pits.

Lucky for us, though, that this is an Earth-based intersection that we can visit without requiring a spaceship. And, sometimes, on especially celebratory days, space visits Wilshire & Fairfax, or rather the cinematic institution that occupies its northeastern corner.

On May 3, guests at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will encounter some cosmic characters as “A Day of Celebrating the Force” beckons “Star Wars” fans with engaging activities, fan-built droids, and an evening screening of “Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back” with Billy Dee Williams in attendance.

The daytime fun is included with museum admission and the film, which will screen at the David Geffen Theater, is separate ticketed; admission starts at $5.

BB-8 and R2-D2, both built by mavens of the Force-filled films, will stop by to meet fans earlier in the day, and a fan-constructed Grogu will also charm visitors.

Not only charm, but enlighten, too: Grogu will help scientists focused on eco-minded concern as they dig into a few intriguing STEM pursuits.

A Jedi performance is another exciting entry. And if you’re a Porg person, and, honestly, who isn’t, you can make puppets inspired by the alien avian icons at a special workshop.

Note that this is all happening a day before May the Fourth, the well-known holiday honoring the “Star Wars” universe. It’s an occasion that takes its catchy name from “may the Force be with you,” an oft-said and oft-heard phrase from the films.

Of course, time is bendy in a grand space opera, so we don’t mind droid-ing out, and connecting with our inner Jedi joy, on May the Third at the Academy Museum, which is located on our favorite planet, er, intersection, Wilshire & Fairfax.
